Rare and Fine One-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Alkaline Glaze, Stamped "II," Pottersville Pottery, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1825, highly ovoid form with narrow opening, rounded rim, and applied strap handles, the surface covered in a light gray alkaline glaze. Impressed at base with a diagonally-oriented "II" mark. Outstanding form, reminiscent of a classical urn. A large restored flake to one side with some crazing emanating from it. A 4" spider crack on underside, extending 3" up base. A faint and tight, approximately 6" horizontal hairline to midsection above. Some typical light surface wear. H 9".
