Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "CARVER & WIGHTMAN / EDINBURG / Va," circa 1850-1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base, semi-rounded rim, and heavily-ribbed handle, decorated around the body with a series of brushed tulips and on the sides of the collar with swags as well as swags flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Front impressed with the elusive maker's mark of Shenandoah County, VA pottery owners, Hiram Carver and William Wightman, underscored by a distinctive one-gallon capacity mark. This pitcher is the first signed example by this firm that we have offered. Significant restoration to spout and collar. Some additional restoration to body of pitcher.
