Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "BELL," Winchester, VA, circa 1835, ovoid jar with flared collar and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse, decorated on the front and reverse with a leafy stem bearing flowers in different stages of blossoming. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Decorated under one handle with maker's mark, "BELL," below a raised-face two-gallon capacity mark. This mark was likely used for a brief period, shortly before or during the employment of the large-sized "BELL" maker's mark. One of a few examples that we have seen bearing this stamp. A 1 1/2" x 1" rim chip and a few other small rim chips. Heavy chipping to one handle. A small chip to one handle. A small chip to shoulder molding.
