Monumental Six-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Federal Eagle and Floral Motifs, Stamped "D. GOODALE / HARTFORD," CT origin, circa 1825-1830, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and two applied lug handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a Federal eagle with shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows, and carrying a banner in its beak. Reverse impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "D. GOODALE / HARTFORD," surrounded by an incised and cobalt-highlighted wreath with hanging crosshatched tulip below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Featuring an outstanding incised figural design, imposing size, and sculptural double-handled form, this jug is among the largest and finest examples of signed Daniel Goodale stoneware that we have seen. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example, acquired decades ago by the consignor. A series of diagonal in-the-firing lines to right side of jug. A crack in underside, extending to shoulder on reverse. A very old 1 1/4" hole in underside, partially filled with an old wooden plug. Heavy chipping around base, much of which occurred in the firing and is glazed over. H 21".
