Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, probably Capt. James Morgan, Cheesequake, NJ, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a deftly slip-trailed drape-and-tassel design. This motif appears under the handles as well. A band of cobalt decorates the tooling at the shoulder. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Several small rim chips. Shallow chipping around base. Crazing to much of jar, primarily bottom half.
