Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "CAMPBELL & MORTON / PENN YAN," George Campbell and Justus Morton, Penn Yan, NY, circa 1848, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a wavy swath of cobalt below the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of the short-lived partnership of potters, George Campbell and Justus Morton. Brushed cobalt "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar is one of a very few surviving examples bearing this stamp. The mark was first documented by stoneware historians, Steven B. Leder and Jack McMackin, in a November 2009 article published in Maine Antiques Digest. Excellent condition with a small chip to exterior of rim on reverse, some very minor chipping and wear to interior of rim, and some staining to base.
