Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "A. CONRAD & CO. / NEW / GENEVA / PA," circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with two large, finely-brushed tulip motifs above Alexander Conrad maker's stenciling. Stenciled rose motif to midsection. Base with large freehand "4," flanked by additional tulips and underscored by a stripe with "X" at the center. Among the finest-decorated examples of Conrad stoneware that we have offered, featuring unusually artistic floral decoration. Literature: Illustrated and discussed in Schaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 165. Schaltenbrand describes this jug as follows: "A most unusual Alexander Conrad 4-Gallon Jug c. 1875. The stenciled decoration is typically Conrad; the brushed flowers and number have a Germanic flavor rarely associated with the Greensboro-New Geneva district." Missing handle. Old blue paint to surface, not associated with any sort of restoration. Salt drips to surface. A spout chip and minor spout wear. A long thin spider crack to base area of jug on left side, extending a short distance onto front of jug at base. An additional short, minor line to base on front.
