Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "MOORE & COLVIN," Tallmadge, OH, circa 1850, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, featuring cobalt highlights to the shoulder and lower handle terminal. The name "COLVIN" in this firm's maker's mark refers to Seymour Colvin, who, along with his two brothers, Almer and Byron, and various descendants produced stoneware in Northeastern Ohio, West Virginia, and Nebraska. Colvin is perhaps most well known for purchasing J.P. Parker's pottery in Jane Lew, WV in 1876 and establishing an operation there with his sons that would last into the early 20th century. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a 1 1/8" piece of adhered kiln material to left side and shallow base chipping.
