One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to John and James Miller, Strasburg, VA, circa 1833, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and arching tab handles, decorated on the front with a brushed floral spray and on the reverse with a series of swags. Brushed cobalt highlights to tops of handles. This jar is densely potted at the base with a narrow bottom on the interior, indicating it was probably thrown by an apprentice. Chipping to handles. A 1" in-the-firing chip to top of rim. A small, in-the-firing base chip, which is glazed over. Two in-the-firing surface fissures to underside, not visible on interior.
