Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Butter Tub, Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG," circa 1890, low-walled cylindrical form with tooled banding, applied circular feet, and open rope-twist handle, heavily-embellished rouletted cross motifs. Exterior surface coated in cream-colored slip and decorated with splashed copper and manganese under a clear lead glaze. Interior coated in a lead-and-manganese glaze over a white slip wash. Side of butter tub impressed with the maker's mark of Samuel Bell & Sons. While John Bell of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania produced this form with frequency, few examples are known by the Strasburg members of the family. One foot missing, replaced with a cork disc. One foot reglued. Glaze loss. Three shallow in-the-firing contact marks to rim. H (to top of handles) 4 1/4" ; Diam. (at base) 8 1/8".
