Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with footed base, tooled rim, and strap handle with unusual applied spurs, decorated across the body with two large sweeping tulips accented with spots, applied over slip-coated clay. Additional tulip decoration to collar and dash-and-spot decoration to handle. Impressed on collar with John Bell maker's mark above a one-gallon capacity mark. A highly-prized form, this example's handle spurs are an embellishment usually found on Bell's redware products. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in the family of the consignor. A thin 4 1/2" crack from rim on side of pitcher. Two small spout chips. H 11 1/4".
