Rare and Very Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Stenciled and Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "A. CONRAD / NEW GENEVA. / FAYETTE CO. PA," circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with heavily-tooled rim, featuring the stenciled maker's mark, "A. CONRAD. / NEW GENEVA. / FAYETTE CO. PA," within a triangular border surrounding a rose. Collar and spout decorated with highly unusual sponged cobalt daubs, reminiscent of the work of the Thompson family of Morgantown, WV. Cobalt stripe decoration to rim and base of collar. Among the best Alexander Conrad pitchers that we have seen. Loss to top of spout. Shallow chips around rim. A Y-shaped, semi-circular line on underside. A 3/4" in-the-firing base chip on reverse.
