Exceptional Stoneware Canning Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "J.G. Shibler.," Joseph G. Shibler, New Geneva or Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring the inscription, "J.G. Shibler," between freehand stripes and drapery brushed above and stripes and vining brushed below. This piece is related to a small ovoid jar, sold as lot 274 in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s March 19, 2016 auction, which also bore the inscription "Jos. Shibler. Oct. the. 26. 1869" and the word "MINE." Relatively few Western Pennsylvania canning jars are known with inscribed names of any sort. The inclusion of top-to-bottom Western Pennsylvania brushwork adds to the rarity and appeal of this work and further emphasizes that it was a specially-made piece. Broken and restored, including some touch-up to cobalt along crack lines. H 8 3/8".
