Large-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "S," probably Joseph G. Shibler, Greensboro or New Geneva, PA, circa 1870, tapered jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, and semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, profusely-decorated with freehand stripes, the base additionally featuring a reverse freehand "S," flanked by dashes and surrounded by spots. Additional brushed-cobalt markings flanking the letter "S" include a crossed circle and freehand "H" to the left and a freehand "H" and cursive "H" to the right. Base of jar further decorated with a series of spots. The reversed "S" on this jar link it to a small number of other pieces bearing the signature of Joseph G. Shibler. The inscribed H's on this jar suggest it may have been made at one of the Hamilton shops. Hairlines in underside, two of which extend a short distance onto base. A small in-the-firing salt drip to reverse. A chip to inner wax sealer rim. H 9 1/2".
