Exceptional Large-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Thistle and Cherries Motifs, Stenciled "Stephen H. Ward. / West Brownsville, Pa," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and semi-squared "wax sealer" rim, decorated with diagonal Stephen H. Ward maker's stenciling, along with a stenciled thistle at the shoulder and stenciled cluster of cherries at the base. Freehand stripe below rim and at base. Canning jars produced by Ward are difficult-to-find in their own right. This example, potted in an outstanding large size, features his maker's mark in a scarce diagonal orientation flanked by two of the region's most desirable stenciled motifs. The use of both of these iconic designs on the same vessel is highly unusual. Among the rarest Western Pennsylvania canning jars that we have ever offered. Rim chips. Some faint lines to right side of jar. Some in-the-firing dryness to surface. H 11 1/4".
