Outstanding Lidded Redware Jar with Rope-Twist Handles and Profuse Manganese Decoration, attributed to David Mandeville, Circleville, NY, circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared rim, and delicately-applied rope-twist handles; decorated around the body with a distinctive brushed manganese drape design featuring ram's-horn scrollwork and a hanging tassel or foliate device. Shoulder decorated with three brushed X's on each side. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Includes a rare David Mandeville redware lid with daubed manganese under a clear lead glaze, slighly oversized for the jar. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market lot, purchase by the consignor decades ago. Jar in strong condition, particularly for this maker, with some expected wear to rim, two small rim chips, and light wear to handles. Lid in excellent condition with a shallow 1 1/4" edge chip.
