Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Large Incised Bird and Brushed Sprig Designs, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & CO. / GEDDES, NY," mid 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a crested bird with turned head, holding an oversized, brushed-cobalt sprig in its mouth. The bird's body includes incised details, delineating the tail, wing, and neck feathers. A curved branch appears below. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and handle terminals. One of a relatively small number of early, incised works known by this influential American potter and pottery owner, who was involved at his own stoneware manufactory in Geddes, NY, at the United States Pottery in Bennington, VT, and at the Southern Porcelain Manufacturing Company in Kaolin, SC. Excellent condition with minor surface wear and two minor chips to interior of spout.
