Fine Sixteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand and Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / GREENSBORO / GREENE CO / PA," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated at the shoulder with a row of freehand spots situated between freehand straight and wavy stripes, above large fuchsia vine design. Midsection with Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling, including the desirable inscription, "GREENE CO," flanked by graduated vertical. Further decorated below with freehand vining above the number "16" within a dotted border, flanked by stripes, and underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A finely-decorated example of Greensboro, PA stoneware, potted in an imposing size. Significant restoration to reverse. A restored crack extending from rim to base on front, including some touch-up to cobalt. H 22 3/4".
