Extremely Rare Slip-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "Henderson," David and James Henderson, Jersey City, NJ, circa 1829-1833, finely-molded pitcher with pedestal base, relief bearded satyr's head, scrollwork, and acanthus leaf motifs to body, and grape vine motif to spout. Handle in the form of a satyr clutching a reed pipe and staff. Shoulder decorated with brushed Albany slip over the relief grapevine design. Interior covered in a clear glaze. Underside impressed with the relief script maker's mark, "Henderson", underscored by a relief chain link and a stamped asterisk. Underside inscribed with ink museum accession numbers and stamp. This pitcher is the first example of D. & J. Henderson stoneware that we have seen bearing a "Henderson" maker's mark, as opposed to the usual "D. & J. HENDERSON / Jersey City" stamp. Head of satyr thumbrest is reglued and colored along crack line. Otherwise excellent condition with some small base chips. H 10 5/8".
