Outstanding Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Dated "MARCH 1859," probably NJ origin, 1859, oversized pitcher with ovoid body, footed base, and tooled collar, decorated with a brushed wreath flanking the bold date, "MARCH 1859", with flourish at the center. Additional brushed lines bordering each character, a hallmark of this as-yet-unidentified potter's work, creates a three-dimensionality to the inscription. A brushed foliate design accents the front of the spout. Pitchers measuring above three gallons in capacity are exceptionally rare. This example, featuring an impressive date decoration, is one of a very few four-gallon pitchers that we have ever offered. A restored area to right side of spout area. A restored 2 1/2" section to bottom of handle. A restored base chip on front. H 15 3/4".
