Extremely Rare Small-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "R.W. Sonner Maker," Strasburg, VA origin, Dated 187?, ovoid, bowl-shaped jar, profusely-decorated around the body and on the interior with Strasburg-style floral and swag motifs. Inscribed around the body with the brushed signature, "R.W. Sonner Maker," and on the underside with the date, "187?." This jar is the only piece that we have seen bearing an R.W. Sonner signature. Exceptional size with unusually-elaborate decoration. The inclusion of brushwork on the interior is extremely rare. The crude potting style of the jar suggest that R.W. Sonner made this piece early in his career or was not a regular potter. This jar is the only example signed by this member of the Sonner family that we have seen. An area of exfoliation to exterior surface, which has been colored to match the clay and includes a small amount of cobalt touch-up. Heavy exfoliation to interior base. A small rim chip. H 4 1/4 : Diam. (at rim) 4 3/4".
