Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / Strasburg, Va", Winchester, VA origin, circa 1845, large-sized, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a series of upward-and-downward-oriented swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with early, two-line Solomon Bell maker's mark under one handle, along with a raised-face six-gallon capacity mark. Exceptional size. Chipping to bottom edge of one handle. Two chips to bottom edge of opposite handle. Numerous small chips to rim. Base chips. H 16 1/4".
