Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Tankard Pitcher with Cobalt Decoration, attributed to S. Bell & Sons, Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, cylindrical form with rounded shoulder, heavily-tooled banding, and ribbed handle, decorated around the body with a series of brushed swags and dashes. This form, based upon the classic redware examples of the Bells and Eberlys, is almost unknown in Strasburg stoneware production. Coupled with the pitcher's extremely rare form is an appealing small size. A large in-the-firing contact mark to reverse. A glazed-over dent to edge of handle. H 5 5/8".
