Ten-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "WILLIAMS AND REPPERT. / GREENSBORO. PA," circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled medallion featuring the bust of a Federal eagle with shield, surrounded by a flowering vine motif. Decoration is further surrounded by Williams and Reppert maker's stenciling, along with stenciled tulips above, and a stenciled flourish below. Freehand straight and wavy stripe decoration to shoulder. Base with freehand "10," flanked by flourishes and underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in Virginia. A long horizontal crack at base, including two reglued wedges at bottom of jar. H 20 3/4".
