Extremely Rare Stoneware Presentation Bank, Inscribed "Francis C. Taylor / Presque Isle Potery(sic) / J.N. Baxter," George F. Webb and Jay S. Childs, Erie, PA origin, circa 1865-1867, ovoid form with stepped finial, carved horizontal coin slot, and elaborate impressed circle decoration to finial, upper surface, and slot area, the surface covered in a brown Albany-type slip. Shoulder and body incised with presentation inscription. This bank is the first example of signed stoneware that we have offered from Erie, Pennsylvania's Presque Isle Pottery, a manufactory run by George F. Webb and Jay S. Childs, along the Erie Extension Canal. The Francis C. Taylor whose name appears on the bank was a local girl born on December 19, 1861, making her still a youngster when her uncle, Julius N. Baxter (likewise inscribed on the bank), gave it to her. A very rare example of northwestern Pennsylvania stoneware, and possibly the only identifiable example from Webb & Childs' partnership. Provenance: For more information on the Presque Isle Pottery, see Schaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 122. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 7".
