Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "STAR / NESTORVILLE, W.VA.," circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, featuring a stenciled star decoration followed by the bold-faced stenciled word, "STAR." Further stenciled below with the town of manufacture, "NESTORVILLE, W. VA." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Attesting to its rarity, this jar is the first example of stenciled Nestorville, WV stoneware that we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in Virginia. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
