Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster and House Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate pastoral scene featuring a rooster with fence and pine tree in the foreground and a series of houses in the distance. The decoration measures 12 1/2" along the curve of the vessel spanning nearly the entire width of the crock's front. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Both the rooster and the dormered house, in its various representations, are considered iconic Bennington motifs of the Julius and Edward Norton period. The fact that this work combines both designs in large scale on the same crock is noteworthy. An in-the-firing contact mark to one house. Two small holes (remnants of an early make-do repair) are drilled on the left side of the crock flanking a 7 1/4" crack from rim. Wire was presumably run through the holes in an attempt to keep the crock usable and the crack from spreading. A 1 7/8" and 1 3/8" flake to rim on reverse. Additional wear to rim. Shallow chipping to interior of rim. A 2 1/4" hairline from rim on right side of crock's front. Some minor surface wear.
