Exceptional Alkaline-Glazed Devil Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA origin, early fourth quarter 20th century, ovoid jug with applied clay facial features of a devil, including horns, diagonally-placed kaolin eyes with black-glazed pupils, angled eyebrows, a broad nose with nostrils, pierced ears, and a smiling mouth with gapped kaolin teeth. This example includes typical, lightly-incised details surrounding each eye, as well as highly unusual, incised wrinkles to the cheeks and forehead. Surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Desirable form with exceptional modeling and detail. Provenance: A recently-surfaced example. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 10".
