Extremely Rare Miniature Slip-Decorated Redware Basket, attributed to John Bell, Chambersburg or Waynesboro, PA, circa 1828-1840, flared form with footed base, heavily-tooled body, and applied arched handle, the surface dipped in a cream-colored slip, decorated with diagonally-sponged bands of copper and manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Additional sponged copper decoration to handle. The distinctive diagonally-sponged decoration and color scheme of this work lead to a firm attribution to John Bell during his short-lived tenure in Chambersburg, PA or during his formative years in Waynesboro, PA. Exceptional form with excellent color. Likely made as a child's toy. Very nice condition with a tight hairline through top of handle, two minor surface lines to basket (one on interior and one on exterior), and a minor base chip. H (to top of handle) 2 3/4".
