Rare Five-Gallon Redware Oil Jar with Elaborate Painted Decoration, Stamped "J.A. BAUER POTTERY / CO. / LOS ANGELES. CAL," early 20th century, unglazed ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim, the surface decorated with early 20th century painted designs, including an American flag with other flags, a shield surmounted by an eagle, Mexican flags, and Native-American-style drawings including human figures and tepees. Greek key and sawtoothed decoration to shoulder. An unusual example of West Coast pottery. Its wonderful painted decoration is indicative of the mix of different cultures in the Los Angeles area during the early 20th century. A long curving crack from rim. Some surface wear to base of rim and shoulder area. Expected paint wear. H 15 1/2".
