Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised and Cobalt-Decorated Figure of a Mustached Man, Ohio origin, circa 1865, straight-sided jar with rounded rim and incised lines at shoulder, decorated on the front with a folky, incised and cobalt-highlighted decoration of a mustached man. The figure is depicted with an oversized head, mustache, very large eye, and pronounced chin, his mouth set in an exaggerated grin. Reverse decorated with a brushed cobalt sleeve culminating in an incised design of a pointing, gloved hand. A brushed cobalt "2" appears between the incised decorations, with the hand possibly pointing at the jar's capacity. The size, boldness, and stylized appearance of the figure make the design something truly special and ahead of its time for a piece of 19th century American stoneware, reminiscent of the work of outsider or modern artists of the 20th century. Human decorations of this artistic quality are indeed very rare. Three cracks on reverse, through hand decoration, one measuring 7", another measuring 4", and one extending partway onto underside. H 9 5/8".
