Rare Signed Rockingham Toby Mug, probably Charles Coxon, South Amboy, NJ, circa 1858-1860, cylindrical mug with relief decoration of a portly man on front and reverse, separated by an acanthus leaf motif. Includes molded twig-form handle. Surface decorated with a reddish-brown glaze over yellowish clay ground. Underside with relief plaque maker's mark that is illegible. Coxon's production of this Toby mug form for E. & W. Bennett of Baltimore, MD, coupled with the fact that the shape of the signature plaque on the underside appears to match that seen on a signed Charles Coxon / South Amboy, N.J. rockingham teapot (sold as lot 259 in Crocker Farm, Inc's October 25, 2014 auction), indicate the signature on the underside of this mug is almost certainly Coxon's. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (to top of handle) 3 9/16".
