Exceptional Anna Pottery Stoneware Frog Inkwell with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Signed and Dated "Anna Pottery / 1882", Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, figure of a frog with hand-incised toes and mouth, seated on a well-detailed, molded clam shell with circular opening. Unusual chip carving to underside edge on inkwell. Profuse cobalt decoration throughout in the form of cobalt spots, stripes, and highlights to the frog, and elaborate spotting to the clam shell, as well as a brushed highlight around the opening. Underside incised with the signature and date, "Anna Pottery / 1882". The finest example of this desirable Anna form that we have ever offered. Many examples of this form are oversalted, resulting in heavy blurring of the cobalt decoration. This example fired well and retains distinctive spotting and highlights. The prolific spot decoration on the clam shell is noteworthy, an uncommon treatment on this form. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 3 1/8" ; L 4".
