Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Impressed Twice "C. CROLIUS / NEW-YORK", Clarkson Crolius, Sr. or Jr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of an undulating vine bearing leaves and a hanging flower. Impressed below on the front and reverse with large "C. CROLIUS / NEW-YORK" maker's mark, underscored by a brushed drape motif. Cobalt stripe decoration to tops of handles. Brown slip coating to interior. This jar is possibly the first example of Crolius family stoneware that we have offered that is impressed with the maker's mark on the front and reverse. The jar's two-sided incised decoration is appealing and stylistically unusual for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Rim chips. Some tight spider lines emanating from the base area, possibly in-the-firing. Some exfoliation to interior base area.
