Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock, attributed to G. & A. Black, Somerfield, PA, circa 1860, wide, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with four hoof-shaped floral devices. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. This cake crock is the first example of this form by a member of the Black family of Western Pennsylvania potters that we have ever offered. A thin crack across underside, extending 3 1/2" up one side of crock towards handle terminal. Grease residue to surface. Several small rim chips.
