Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Devil Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders", Cleveland, GA origin, circa 1975, ovoid jug with applied facial features, including glazed eyes with black pupils, a well-sculpted nose, a v-shaped mouth made without teeth, pointed ears, and curved horns. Jug features dramatic depressions to surface along eyes. Surface covered in a mottled-brown alkaline glaze; this glaze, rarely seen on Meaders' devil jugs, was probably achieved by mixing Albany slip with the more standard alkaline glaze, and makes this a particularly desirable example. Underside incised "Lanier Meaders". A rare and desirable form by Georgia's leading ceramic folk artist. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 3/4".
