Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "HUDSON N.Y. POTTERY," Benjamin Wolford at the Hudson, New York pottery of Amos S. Hover and Charles Fingar, circa 1870, large-sized jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a ring-necked pheasant with crest and turned head, perched on a stump atop a heavily-shrubbed ground. Nice spotted and striped details to bird and stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Desirable subject matter, drawn in an exceptionally large size, extending 13 3/8" up the front of the jug. In-the-firing contact marks to surface, some including adhered clay, the most notable of which is on the front center of the jug. A base chip on front of jug. H 19 1/4".
