Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Mortar and Pestal Motif, Stamped "JACOB CAIRE / PO'KEEPSIE N Y", circa 1849-1852, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with three impressed and cobalt-highlighted mortar and pestle motifs. Each impressed design includes an impressed foliate motif on the mortar. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Given the subject matter of the decoration, this jug may have been made for use or sale in an apothecary's shop. A large network of crazing to left side and reverse of jug, including one line emanating from the base of the handle. A 1 1/8" base chip. Other minor base chips.
