Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to the Coffman Family, Elkton, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an undulating vine bearing graduated leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Distinctive two-gallon capacity mark at shoulder on front. Appealing decoration with excellent color. A faint line across underside, which becomes a long, thin spider crack to body of jar on one side. A second, shorter spider crack (possibly in-the-firing) to a brownish, in-the-firing discolored area on opposite side. A smooth in-the-firing contact mark to front near base, which is lightly salt-glazed. A short, in-the-firing line to interior of rim. Some staining.
