Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Chain Link and Floral Motifs, Stamped "G. HAMERS", Lower Shenandoah Valley Region, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a flowering vine design below a series of chain links. Reverse decoration with a large, lightly-brushed flowering vine design, culminating in an oversized blossom. One of a very small number of pieces bearing this maker's mark known, new research suggests their origin is the greater lower Shenandoah Valley region. Right handle with a 1 1/2" chip and a small chip. Left handle with a 1 1/4" flake to left handle. A 3 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Two other short lines from rim. Rim chips. Plaster residue to interior and rim area. A 1" base chip on side of jar. A minor base chip. Several very short, vertical lines at base, possibly in-the-firing. Two thin horizontal lines at base.
