Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va.", circa 1860, cylindrical crock with large, extruded lug handles and tooling to shoulder and rim, decorated on the front and reverse with an undulating vine bearing three large flowers, applied over slip-washed clay. Impressed under one handle with Solomon Bell maker's mark beside a one-gallon capacity mark. Possibly the finest cake crock by this maker that we have ever offered. This form is rare in Solomon Bell's production, and this example is appealing in the large size of the extruded handles in comparison to the crock itself. The strong decoration, in the form of a horizontal floral motif, indicates this crock was likely made shortly into Bell's employment of this three-line maker's stamp. A chip to exterior of rim. An approximately 1" sliver-shaped chip to interior of rim. Two additional, small in-the-firing chips to interior of rim. A long horizontal crack on underside, continuing several inches onto underside in two places, in the form of two faint lines. H 7 1/8" ; Diameter 8".
