Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Inscribed "Lard" and Dated "1812", attributed to Nathan Clark, Athens, NY, 1812, ovoid jar with footed base and applied lug handles, inscribed on one side in slip-trailed script, "Lard", and on the reverse with the date, "1812", within a cartouche. Handle terminals accented with cobalt slip. Desirable culinary inscription and historic, early date, on a piece produced during the formative years of Nathan Clark's career, shortly after dissolving his previous partnership with Thomas Howe. One handle professionally restored. Other handle with restored chip. Two professionally-restored chips to foot. Additional shallow chipping to foot. Two short lines in collar. A few small areas of restoration to top of rim.
