Very Rare Rockingham-Glazed Earthenware Figural Group, probably OH or PA origin, circa 1860-1885, hand-modeled figure of a seated monkey with slightly-turned head, snake wrapped around its neck, and turtle standing at its feet, all situated on a rectangular base with canted corners, the surface covered in an amber-brown Rockingham glaze over pale-orange clay. Excellent incised details to monkey's head, as well as additional incised details to monkey's hands and feet and turtle's head. Collectively, the subject matter of this group is highly unusual and this sculpture is the first that we have seen in 19th century American production that combines these three animals. The style of the monkey figure is closely-related to those seen in Pennsylvania-German redware, sometimes attributed to an itinerant "hobo potter". This work was most likely inspired by the Pennsylvania-German style. Missing upper half of snake and one of monkey's thumbs. H 3 1/2" ; L 4".
