Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse-and-Tree Motif, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1880, large-sized, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with two stenciled horses facing a slip-trailed design of a tree above a brushed ground. Cobalt highlight to capacity mark. An appealing use of stenciled, brushed, and slip-trailed decorative elements. A related crock using this decoration and impressed with Connecticut advertising was sold at Crocker Farm, Inc.'s Kelly Young Sale, lot 197, Jan 30, 2010. Significant restoration to left side of crock, extending onto reverse, not affecting decoration. Exfoliation to Albany slip on interior. A thin crack to rear terminal of right handle. H 13".
