Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Chicken Waterer, Stamped "THOS. HAIG / 975 N. 2ND ST. / PHILA", Thomas Haig, Jr., Philadelphia, PA, circa 1875, cylindrical form with watering trough, tooled finial, and applied tab handles, decorated with on the reverse and sides with a brushed tulip motif, separated by swags. Trough surrounded by swags and decorated with a foliate motif at the base and top. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals along with a brushed stripe along the tops of the handle. Top of waterer impressed with a cobalt-highlighted "OO" mark. Reverse impressed with the elaborate cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Thomas Haig, Jr. Relatively few salt-glazed examples of this form by Haig are known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in the Northeastern U.S. Loss to finial. Chips to edge of watering trough. Large chips to left handle. Some small chips to end of right handle. A faint 1 1/2" line to top of watering trough. H 7 1/2".
