Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "WILLSON'S & YOUNG / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim molding, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a tulip plant featuring five blossoms with stamens, becoming larger as they ascend the plant's stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. The firm, Willson's & Young, combines two of the most famous names in Harrisburg stoneware production: T.H. Willson and John Young. This jar is only the second example of stoneware that we have ever offered featuring this mark, and the finer of the two, a true testament to its rarity. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Midwestern U.S. A 4 1/4" line from rim on front. Two short, faint lines at base on front. A small rim chip on reverse. A shallow, in-the-making dent to left handle, which is glazed over. A long, faint spider line on reverse. H 13".
