Scarce Two-Piece Stoneware GATE CITY WATER COOLER with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Fort Edward, NY origin, circa 1886, ovoid base with tooled accents, circular bunghole, and large slip-trailed cobalt decoration, impressed with the cobalt-highlighted mark, "GATE CITY WATER COOLER. / Patented May 25th, 1886.". Removeable upper section is potted in a cylindrical form with semi-rounded rim and plaster-like filtering medium on interior, decorated on the front with a slip-trailed bird-on-branch. The shoulder features the impressed and cobalt-highlighted mark, "GATE CITY STONE FILTER.", followed by five patent dates ranging from 1882 to 1886. Cooler includes metal spigot and an associated Remmey, Philadelphia stoneware lid with cobalt-swag decoration. Filter with a 6" spider crack from rim on reverse and chips to flange on underside. Cooler in very nice condition with three chips to inner rim. Lid with several chips. H (excluding lid) 21 3/8".
