Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Raised-Wing Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y.", circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with turned head, raised wings, and paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. Cobalt highlights to makers' mark and capacity mark. This variant of the Whites' Pottery's classic paddletail bird motif, which incorporates raised wings into the design, is seldom seen. Restoration throughout, including a small area of touch-up to bird.
