Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Landscape Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & C0 / LYONS", NY State origin, circa 1840, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a painterly, brushed design of a landscape with mountains in the distance, a central body of water, and a tree in the foreground. Brushed "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A highly unusual design, reminiscent of Hudson River School paintings of the period, art which Nathan Clark and other New York State potters would have been very familiar with. Very nice condition. Three rim chips. An in-the-firing, horizontal separation to midsections of handles where they meet the body of the jar. Very minor chipping to base, most or all of which occurred in the firing.
