Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Inscribed "Cake Pot", Stamped "FRANK B NORTON", Worcester, MA origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with crossed slip-trailed leaves flanking the maker's mark. Reverse slip-trailed with the cobalt-script inscription, "2 / Cake Pot". This crock is believed to be the first example of 19th century American stoneware that we have offered featuring the term "Cake Pot". A second noteworthy feature is the omission of "WORCESTER, MASS." below Norton's name, a possible maker's mark variant that we have never offered before. Some fry to cobalt. Two small chips to left handle and a small chip to right handle. Interior of rim with three small chips and a minor nick. A minor chip to underside at edge.
